    PEAX was born as multi stylistic cross-over ensemble by saxophonist Ties Mellema and percussionist/drummer Barry Jurjus. PEAX integrates all of the music that has resonated with Barry and Ties in their 20+ years career as classical and cross-over musicians.
    RESET is the result of several resets in different areas. Ties having had cancer in 2015 and 2017 decided it was time to finally start making music with no boundaries. Barry was looking for ways to integrate his love for jazz, pop and world music (especially African beats) into his playing. Inspiration comes from minimal music, funk, jazz, baroque, avant-garde, drum and bass. A mix that is truly never heard before.

QUIN

Ties: “The piece began as an improvisation on renaissance music by Dufay and Machaut; and this is where the melodic bass line comes from. With that bass, Quin started a life of its own and Barry and I developed this piece into what it is today. The track starts small and escalates into an ending that is up-tempo, even for drum and bass (160 bpm!). It is worth mentioning Maartje-Maria den Herder’s role on cello; she launches the beat with a floating and penetrating classical part.”

Barry: “QUIN is built up around Ties’ melodic bassline. The form presented itself naturally. The piece begins classically, slowly but surely the groove takes over, and then the piece continues to develop itself. We needed a moment of calm. The cello brought that stillness and much more, thanks to Maartje-Maria. It then continues as a drum and bass highway that pushed us to the limits.”
